The story of the Forty-Seven Ronin, who in 1703 committed ritual suicide after avenging the death of their master, was fictionalized in Japanese Kabuki theater as Chūshingura. The prints above come from a rare mid-19th century collection of Kabuki scenes in the Harvard Theatre Collection.
